Built for a specific kind of rain
Most rain shells are designed around steady, moderate rainfall. The North Face's newest jacket is instead tuned for the short, intense downpours typical of Malaysia's monsoon season — rain that can drop 30mm in under an hour.
Key features
The shell uses a higher hydrostatic-head fabric rating than the brand's standard hiking jacket, along with pit zips sized for the region's heat and humidity, and a helmet-compatible hood for river crossings and waterfall approaches.
Local reception
Early feedback from Malaysian hiking communities has focused on breathability — a common complaint with waterproof shells in tropical climates. The North Face says the fabric's higher air permeability is a direct response to that feedback.
